The goal saw San Siro and all of the Nerazzurri side of Milan explode. On the other hand, it was tears for the Rossoneri. AC Milan were relegated to Serie B for a betting scandal. Mozzini stayed with Inter until the following year and was part of the European Cup run as the Nerazzurri went out in the semi-final to Real Madrid with heads held high. The team would finish the season fourth and at the end of the season, the Scudetto hero left for Bologna, his last team at a high level.
During the season, Inter beat Juve 4-0 but the crucial match was at a full San Siro on 27th April against Roma. A draw would have been enough but the Giallorossi were 2-1 up. Mozzini went on a rare foray beyond midfield and would later describe his goal. “I told myself that I’d go forward too. The ball was blocked at the edge of the area and I found myself on the right. As a left-footer, I only use the right to go up the stairs so when I swung a foot at it and it went in, it was a miracle.”
It was the decisive goal to win the Scudetto in the year when Milan were relegated to Serie B for the first time. It was a moment that saw him enter Inter history and the hearts of the fans. But, Roberto Mozzini remembers the goal in that 2-2 draw with Roma in 1980 with even more fondness as it was his only one in a Nerazzurri shirt. Mozzini was a centre-back by trade and goals usually evaded him as the side won a twelfth title with him partnering Graziano Bini at the back.
