Like Father, Like Son

Massimo Moratti SCROLL TO READ STORIA N.92 / 110

He had just previously phoned to say that he would have to work late at the office…She subsequently rang his secretary, who said that Massimo could not receive calls at that moment in time. “I know,” said Milly. “I’ve just seen him on TV.” “He also has Rai to speak to…” the secretary concluded. As always, passion prevailed and Massimo Moratti was eventually pardoned by his wife. Alongside millions of Intersiti across the world, they duly enjoyed 18 successive years of both joy, pain and happiness.

I always thought that the fans were the real owners of Inter. In my dad’s time, Inter was just a passion for all of us in the family. Because of this, leading the club was also tough because beyond being a fan, you have full responsibility for it.

The decision to buy the club and the eventual deal actually both took little time. There were no problems from a financial or practical perspective, however, there was still one issue that arose that was directly linked to his family, and more specifically his wife. “Don’t do it, don’t do it, don’t do it. If you do it then I will leave this house,” said Milly when her husband initially posed the question. Some days later, whilst she was preparing lunch, she happened to see her husband interviewed on TV, who smiled when asked the question whether he had bought the club.

For Massimo Moratti, Inter had always been a family matter. Obviously a family in the traditional sense, but also one that had an impact on millions of Inter fans. Growing up among the Grande Inter side and with the players often visiting his house, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and purchased Inter in 1995, taking the club back to the summit of Italy, Europe and the world. It was undoubtedly a successful affair, although not without problems, one of which was not even related to the world of Italian football.
