Itā€™s not that I didnā€™t do stupid things, I definitely did. But, in the end they never caught up with me. Or rather, as long as I was running nobody saw that it was too much of a problem

Berti was only 22 at the time and a key figure with 32 appearances and seven goals. He was a modern midfielder, with physical abilities beyond the ordinary and excellent technique. In those years, Nicolino knew the city and Inter or rather the Interisti like few others. He lived in the centre and breathed together with the city, heā€™d go to bed at any time and then always turn up fresh and rested for training, He spent ten years at Inter and there were many unforgettable moments, his goals against Milan among them. ā€œNicola Berti facci un goalā€ (Nicola Berti score for us) is still heard from the Inter Curva.

At the end, he fell to his knees in front of the Inter Curva and it wasnā€™t clear if it was from the joy of scoring or exhaustion. Post-match, he declared out of breath that ā€œI almost couldnā€™t go anymore at the end.ā€ 30 years later after and the exhaustion had passed, the joy of having scored one of the greatest goals in the history of Inter remained. That match between Bayern Munich and Inter in the 1998-89 UEFA Cup saw Nicola Berti take the ball from just outside the Nerazzurriā€™s half, beat half of the German side for pace and after running 50 metres he applied the finish to make it 2-0. It didnā€™t matter so much that the Inter would be eliminated by the Bavarians, it was incredible year for the Nerazzurri crowned off the by the record-breaking Scudetto win.
